Unable To Connect To Linksys Router

A Linksys router has a built-in web-based setup utility that helps customize your network settings. If you are unable to connect to Linksys router, carry out the steps below.

Reasons For The Problem

  • Improper cable connections
  • Incorrect router’s IP address
  • Incorrect router’s username and password
  • Web browser issue
  • Defective router

Step 1 - Router Connection

Wired Connection

  • Check if you have properly connected the Ethernet cable between the rear port of your modem and the WAN port of your Linksys router.
  • Also, the connection between the router and your computer using the Ethernet cable must be secure.
  • Note: If the Ethernet cable is damaged, replace it with a new one.

Wireless Connection

  • Make sure the Ethernet cable properly connected between your modem and the router.
  • Also, make sure you have established the wireless connection between the router and your computer using the correct network information (network name and network key).

Step 2 - Router LED

Check if the Internet LED on the router stays lit after establishing the connection.

Step 3 - Router’s IP Address

  • On your Windows computer, enter ‘ping 192.168.1.1 -t’ in the Command Prompt window.
  • Check if you get any replies. If so, it indicates that there is no communication problem between the router and the computer.

Step 4 - Router’s Admin Password

  • Launch a web browser and visit the router’s login page.
  • Provide the router’s default username and password in the appropriate fields.
  • If you have changed the router admin password, enter the new one instead of the default one for accessing the web-based interface of the router.
  • If you cannot access it, go to step 4.

Step 5 - Reset The Router

  • Press the Reset button on the rear panel of the Linksys router and hold it for a few seconds.
  • Release this button after 10 seconds.
  • This will reset the Linkys router to factory defaults.

Step 6 - Firmware Update/Upgrade

  • If the issue persists, download and install the latest firmware version of the router. This will update the router’s firmware to the most recent version.

Step 6 - Router Settings

  • Once you access the router’s web-interface page, customize the router settings as you require. If you still unable to connect to Linksys router, click the call button available on the screen.
