How To Setup pfSense As a Router

Switch on your computer and login as administrator.
Download the pfSense router’s software from the official site.
You can burn the downloaded pfSense router file to a CD if required.
After that, insert the CD that contains the downloaded pfSense router file into your computer and wait for the boot process to complete.
Remove the network cables from your computer during the pfSense router installation.
On the pfSense router’s main screen, click the Setup menu followed by the Install pfSense to hard drive option.
Choose the Uni-processor option when prompted.
Perform the on-screen instructions for the installation process to complete.
Enter your LAN interface name in the given text field when prompted.
If you wish to use a third party interface, then enable the DHCP server when prompted.
Go to the official site of pfSense router using the 192.168.1.1 IP Address.
You will be prompted to enter the pfSense router’s credentials.

To login to your pfSense router account, follow the instructions given below.

Launch a web browser on your system and enter the IP address of the pfSense application in its text field.
Press the Enter button on your system’s control panel.
Now you will be prompted to enter the username and password of your pfSense router account in the given text field.
After that, click the Login button.

The first step of the configuration procedure is to unbox the pfSense router.
Next, you have to connect the network cables. Two connections have to be made: connect the WAN port and Port 0 on the router.
Attach a cable between the LAN port and the switch in the next step.
Connect the power cable to the pfSense router and the power outlet.
Wait until the initial booting process is over and then configure the router.
Enter the IP Address of the pfSense router.

Make use of the Linksys router with pfSense using the procedure stated below.
Next, you have to set the LAN IP Address of the router and pfSense interface to a different IP Addresses, but make sure they are in the same subnet.
The succeeding step is to disable DHCP on your Linksys wireless router.
Connect an Ethernet cable from the SWITCH or LAN port of the wireless router to the pfSense interface.

Log into the web management portal of the pfSense device.

Go to the Status menu and select the DHCP-Leases option.

Next, you have to sign into the web utility page of the TP-Link router using the username and password.

From the Quick Setup menu, select the Access AP Mode Settings option.

Choose the Type as Static IP from the drop-down list and key in the correct IP Address.

Select the Subnet Mask from the Subnet drop-down menu and highlight the Disable checkbox near the DHCP Server section.

You have now set up pfSense on your TP-Link router.

Launch the pfSense Management Utility on the server of your firewall.
Navigate to the Interfaces menu and select the LAN option.
Go to the bottom right corner and tap the Add Interface button.
Choose the port from which the Netgear VPN users connect and type fpx0 for a USB connection and fpx1 for a wireless connection.
Click the Interface option present under the interface menu to set up the interface properly.
Mention the name of the interface, its description, and the IP address of the Netgear router in the next step.
In the Bridge With field, select the None option.
Specify the SSID in the respective textbox and save the configuration.

To factory reset the pfSense device, you have to perform the forthcoming steps.
Search for the Reset button on the pfSense device.
Position a paper clip in the starting of the Reset slot and push the Reset button inwards.
Hold it firmly for at least 10 seconds and then release it.
After the reset process is over, the router will restart.
Once it completes the booting process, you can configure the device and then use it.

First, connect a keyboard and a monitor to the pfSense server or console.
Select the Reset the WebGUI Password option to reset the password of the user interface.
If you wish to reset the administrator password, then reboot the pfSense device and choose the Boot Option as Single User Mode.
Tap the Enter key to initiate start/bin/sh.
Next, you have to run the -a-t ufs followed by run/etc/rc.initial.password. Read through the prompts and follow them to begin the password reset procedure.
Enter reboot/sbin/reboot in the final step.
